Importance of Scope Definition and Validation

More often than not, scope definition is a lengthy process that is initiated by the identification of a ‘need’. Scope definition allows the Client to communicate the ‘need’ to the project team, and scope validation ensures that the end product aligns with the Client’s ‘need’.  So what happens when the scope isn’t derived correctly or the derived scope cannot be traced back to the original scope? What happens when scope documentation is recycled from previous major projects and not adapted for the current project’s needs, or when designers receive drawings to base their design on under the incorrect assumption that the Client’s needs have been correctly captured?  Experience tells us that there are significant commercial and programme impacts, as the Client will be paying for the delivery of scope items that are not required or will receive a product that is not aligned with the ‘need’.

Through our extensive experience across the project phases and support of the Client through the INSW Gateway Reviews, MCE understands the importance of scope definition and validation and has the skillset required to assist clients in the procurement of a product that meets their ‘need’.  We are able to guide clients through the following stages:

  1. Business Cases: Our experience in developing business cases and deriving clear requirements on major Transport infrastructure projects such as the Central Station Precinct, Sydney Metro City and Southwest, Metro Western Sydney Airport, and future Metros allows the Client to make informed decisions on whether the project is viable.
  2. Development of Detailed Specification: Our experience in the transition from business case into feasibility design and detailed specifications allows the Client to procure a product that meets the original scope.
  3. Scope Validation: Our experience in scope validation and verification of the requirements of the design ensures that designers and contractors are delivering to the Client’s ‘need’.

Correct scope definition and validation are integral to the success of a project yet are often overlooked in the race to the finish line. For more info on how we can assist with your project, send us an email at info@mce-aus.com.
