Australian British Chamber of Commerce Rugby World Cup Lunch

Image, MCE News, Uncategorized

The Australian British Chamber of Commerce kicked off the anticipation for the upcoming Rugby World Cup with a spectacular Sports Lunch on August 31st. Held in the elegant Grand Ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel, Sydney, the event was a true celebration of the sport and its camaraderie.

Our MCE directors, Matt Colton, Stephen Pascall and Jonathan Richardson, specialist team, Brian Keating, Cameron Ritchie and Phil Barkman and esteemed guests from Richard Crookes Construction joined the vibrant gathering. The atmosphere was convivial as legends of the game took the stage to recount historic battles and share insights about the upcoming tournament.

We were honoured to have exceptional guest speakers: David Kirk, the All Black RWC Winning Captain; Ben Evans, the Wales International; Dan Parks, the Scottish International; Al Baxter, the Wallaby great; Sera Naiqama, the current Australian Wallaroo player; and Matt Mostyn, the Irish-Australian. Special guests included Sean Maloney from Stan Sports, Ken Averre MBE, President of Sydney Convicts, and Jim Williams, former Wallaby International.

Beyond the excitement of the event, we were proud to contribute to a noble cause. The Chamber supported Hearts in Rugby Union, a charity dedicated to aiding players who’ve faced severe spinal injuries while playing rugby.

Amidst lively conversations, beverages, and entertainment, the three-hour lunch united industry peers and rugby enthusiasts alike. As we set the stage for the Rugby World Cup, this event was more than just a warm-up—it was an inspiring journey through the heart of the sport of rugby.

Earlier this week, our Associate Director, Johan Venter, a distinguished Fellow of the Southern African ICE (SAICE), organized an exceptional “Virtual” Site Visit to the Sydney Metro. The event attracted 200 passionate engineers from Africa.

Supported by MCE’s Director, Thomas Lee, and Senior Design Manager, Annabella Dao, this immersive experience provided a unique opportunity for attendees to gain valuable insights into the world-class Sydney Metro project.

Annabella Dao, a talented civil engineer and currently Design Manager for Stations, Boxes & Tunnelling (SBT) on the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport project, shared her personal career journey, shedding light on the opportunities and challenges faced by young professionals in the dynamic environment of the Sydney Metro.

Johan Venter, a South African civil engineer living and working in Sydney, introduced participants to the remarkable transportation system of Sydney and highlighted the local construction realities that he has encountered in our vibrant city.

Thomas Lee then took centre stage to present the Sydney Metro project, widely regarded as the largest transport infrastructure endeavour in the Southern Hemisphere. His captivating presentation focused on the challenges and valuable lessons learned during the construction of the City and Southwest sections.

The virtual site visit featured exclusive construction videos, carefully curated with formal approval from Sydney Metro, showcasing the impressive progress and innovative techniques employed on this monumental project.
