Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) NSW Christmas Dinner

Last Friday the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) NSW Christmas Dinner was held in Sydney.  MCE proudly sponsored a table and contributed to the organisation of this wonderful event that was enjoyed with many colleagues from across the industry with this year’s focus on ‘Engineering Innovation.’

At MCE, we support the ICE and we share the same values of trust, honesty, integrity, ethics, professionalism, quality, health, safety, sustainability and public interest that guide our work which we consider essential for the betterment of our profession and the society.

On this evening, we had the privilege of hearing from Professor Andrew T Harris who enlightened the room with a presentation about innovation and its disruptive nature.  Andrew is the Australian Director of Laing O’Rourke’s future engineering and innovation consultancy, the Engineering Excellence Group.

This presentation was followed by examples of how to implement innovative solutions and technologies presented by our colleagues from Mott MacDonald and the BIM modelling of Sydney Metro Northwest stations, BECA and the 3D modelling of Bundarbo Bridge refurbishment, and KBR and the software development for designing and modelling rail infrastructure assets.

The final presentation of the night was delivered by our colleagues from Bechtel who reminded us all of the significant impact that work has on our mental health.  Depression is still stigmatised, particularly in the construction industry, therefore it is really important that we look after each other to prevent it and to be able to identify the signs symptoms so we can better help our colleagues.

We would like to thank the team at Constructive for sponsoring this year’s event.

Lastly, MCE would like to make special mention to our friend and Master of Ceremonies, Thomas Lee, Chairperson for ICE’s NSW Committee; thank you for another great event that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
